2.6.2 Dispersed Suspended Packing

(1) Introduction

Several types of dispersed suspended packing are available, made mainly from plastic and fibre materials with a wide variety of shapes, including hollow balls, cascade rings, Raschig rings, Pall rings and suspended particles.

(2) Characteristics

  1. Spherical or granular in shape, generally regular, with high porosity and large specific surface area.
  2. Relative density close to water — slightly above or below 1. Once covered with biofilm the media move with the water; in an aeration tank the motive power comes from aeration, and in anoxic/anaerobic reactors from mechanical agitation.
  3. Made of polyethylene, polypropylene or polyurethane plastic/resin; some surfaces are specially treated so micro-organisms adhere easily.
  4. Do not agglomerate or clog; aged biofilm detaches automatically under hydraulic scour and aeration agitation.
  5. High mass-transfer efficiency with no additional energy needed.

Advantages: low residual sludge, good removal of refractory substances, efficient nitrogen and phosphorus removal and interception of suspended solids; no fixing or hanging required, easy to use and replace, reducing installation and operating workload. The drawback is that design and commissioning demand more attention.

2.6.2.1 Spherical Suspended Packing

Spherical suspended packing (porous rotating spherical suspended packing) is injection-moulded from polypropylene with several regular or irregular cavities inside, keeping dynamic equilibrium in water. Strong biomass adhesion, large specific surface area, high porosity, stable chemical and biological properties, durability, no harmful release, UV and ageing resistance and strong hydrophilicity.

Quantity per m³ is calculated from the packing-volume (1/d³) relationship, anchored to the reference values Φ150=350, Φ100=1000, Φ80=2000 pcs/m³. Relative density 0.92 is the reference value. Surface area and unit mass for Φ55/Φ60 are not yet confirmed — marked On request rather than invented; confirm before quoting.

(10) Bio Flow-dispersed Ball

Based on the "flow-dispersed" phenomenon — solids and organic matter in water gathering where flow is fast and slow — the XZFSBBR bio flow-dispersed technology uses a special porous mineral and plastic outer shell with granular filling. Advantages include simple operation, low energy, simple management, strong water distribution, high dissolved COD removal, easy hanging and stripping of biofilm, no sludge flushing tank needed, small footprint, long service life and very low secondary pollution; suitable for domestic sewage, industrial wastewater and biological deodorization, with a biological loading above 35 g/L.
