Retrofit

Retrofitting an aeration grid

A diffuser retrofit is a plumbing project that happens to include diffusers. The failure mode is ordering the discs before confirming the saddles, the thread, and the airflow the existing blower can actually deliver.

Also searched as: aeration diffuser retrofit · replace ceramic disc diffusers · fine bubble diffuser upgrade · membrane disc diffuser replacement · disc aerator supplier

The survey that has to come before the quotation

ConnectionSaddle and thread on the existing air laterals - the single most common reason a retrofit stalls after the order
Airflow per unitWhat each position is asked to pass, and whether the existing blower has the pressure to pass it through a different diffuser
SubmergenceDepth of the diffuser below the water line. It sets the oxygen transfer performance more than the diffuser model does
RetentionHow long the tank holds the water. Short retention makes mixing as important as transfer
AccessWhether the basin can be isolated and drained, or the work has to be done in service

Send us those five answers with the grid drawing and we will quote against the actual installation, not against a catalogue page. Where the existing laterals are in poor condition, we will say so - a retrofit of the diffusers on corroded pipe is a repeat outage waiting to happen.

Ceramic, membrane, or both in one grid?

The choice between a ceramic disc and a membrane disc is a choice about fouling and about how the plant is cleaned. Ceramic resists chemical attack and holds its pore structure for years, but it cannot be cleaned by tapping and it does not seal against backflow. A membrane closes its own pores when the airflow stops, which keeps liquid out of the grid during shutdowns and makes it far less sensitive to the biological growth that collects on a wetted surface.

Mixing the two in one grid is legitimate when the duty differs across the basin: a plug-flow train with a high-load head end and a low-load tail. It is not legitimate as a way to spread a budget across a basin - the two diffusers will foul at different rates and the maintenance plan breaks down.

Product data: disc aerator · technical details · ABS air pipe and fittings, which is usually replaced at the same time.

The sequence that keeps the plant running

Most retrofits are done in stages, one pass or one basin at a time, with the remaining train carrying the load. That sets three requirements on the purchase: the new diffusers must be compatible with the existing air supply without re-rating the blower in the middle of the project; the delivered quantities must match the pass being converted, not the whole plant; and the trailing stock must survive a wet, outdoor site for months without the packaging failing.

We ship retrofit quantities per pass and mark the cartons by grid position when a customer asks for it. It costs nothing at our end and it is the difference between a two-day installation and a two-week argument on site.

Prices for diffusers are quoted on request against connection type, airflow per unit and quantity. We do not publish a per-unit price, because the same body with a different connection or membrane is a different part.

Frequently asked

Can I replace diffusers without emptying the basin?

Usually not the discs themselves - the grid has to be accessible. What can be done in service is staged replacement, one pass or one basin at a time, with the remaining trains carrying the load. Plan the purchase by pass so the delivered quantity matches what you can isolate.

Do I have to replace the air laterals as well?

Check them before deciding. Corroded or scaled laterals will limit the new diffusers and force a second outage. ABS laterals and fittings are supplied in the same order when the survey shows they need replacing.

Will new diffusers reduce my energy bill?

Only if the old ones were fouled, blocked or wrong for the duty. A retrofit that keeps the same airflow and the same submergence with clean diffusers reduces the pressure the blower has to overcome, but the size of that saving depends on the measured condition of the existing grid. Ask for the before-and-after blower data to be recorded.

What do you need to quote a diffuser retrofit?

Grid layout, connection type and thread, airflow per diffuser position, submergence, number of passes and whether the work is staged. With those we quote the diffusers, the saddles and, if needed, the ABS pipework in one document.

Send the grid drawing and the connection details

We quote diffusers, saddles and air pipe together so the retrofit does not stall on a missing part.
