This region will rebuild a great deal of water and wastewater infrastructure, and the plants it builds have to work in a climate that punishes equipment designed for somewhere warmer. Cold is the engineering constraint that matters most here — not cost.
Most media enquiries from warm markets are about cost per cubic metre. In this region the questions that decide whether a plant works are different, and they are all thermal.
The organisms that oxidise ammonia grow slowly at the best of times, and their growth rate falls sharply as the mixed liquor cools. A reactor sized on annual average temperature will meet its ammonia limit for three seasons and fail in the fourth. Our MBBR carriers are published for a 5–60 °C service range, and the nitrification figures on the product page sit in a band rather than being a single value — a cold plant has to be sized at the cold end of that band.
The same applies to suspended-growth plants, and it is why attached growth is attractive here: the biofilm is not washed out when the sludge settles poorly, so the biology survives the winter even if performance drops.
Settling media is not damaged by being cold. What gets damaged is everything around it: ice expanding against module frames and launders, and water trapped in tubes or plates splitting them on the first hard freeze. A clarifier taken out of service for the season should be drained, and modules should not be installed into a basin that will then freeze solid around them.
Polypropylene and polyethylene both lose impact strength as temperature falls. The material does not fail in service, it fails during handling: modules dropped off a truck at −15 °C crack where the same drop at +20 °C would have been harmless. Two practical consequences — specify copolymer grades where the handling is rough, and write the handling instruction into the packing note rather than leaving it to site practice.
Projects in this region commonly reference GOST naming and formats rather than EN or ASTM. That is a documentation question rather than a product question, and the right moment to settle it is at enquiry stage.
| Item | How we handle it |
|---|---|
| Naming and format | Documentation can follow the naming convention your project uses. Tell us which at quotation stage. |
| Language | Agreed at quotation stage rather than assumed. Ask early — it changes what has to be prepared and how long it takes. |
| Certificates of conformity | We do not claim certification we have not been assessed against. If your project requires a certificate from a specific body, raise it at enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it. |
| Drawings | Dimensioned drawings for fabricated items, issued with the offer. |
Sea freight to a Black Sea or Baltic port and rail freight overland both appear in enquiries; the route changes packing and transit time more than product choice. One economics point worth knowing early: settling modules and carriers are volumetric cargo, costed on volume rather than weight. A small order can therefore cost proportionally more to ship than a large one, which sometimes argues for consolidating several duties into one container.
They work, but the removal rate falls and the reactor has to be sized for the coldest sustained period rather than the annual average. Our HDPE carriers are published for a 5-60 degrees C service range, and the nitrification figures quoted on the product page are not constant across that range — a plant designed on summer data will under-perform in the first winter.
The media itself is not damaged by being frozen while wet; the structures around it are. The risks are ice expanding against module frames and troughs, and water trapped in tubes or plates splitting them on the first freeze. A clarifier taken out of service for the winter should be drained, and modules should not be installed into a basin that will then freeze solid.
Documentation can follow the naming and the format your project uses, and the language requirement is agreed at quotation stage rather than assumed. What we do not do is claim certification to a standard we have not been assessed against — if your project requires a certificate of conformity from a specific body, raise it at enquiry stage and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it.
Sea freight to a Black Sea or Baltic port, and rail freight overland, both appear in enquiries. The route affects packing and transit time more than product choice, so it is confirmed with the offer. Volumetric cargo — settling modules and carriers — is normally costed on volume rather than weight, which is worth knowing early because it changes the economics of a small order.
Five pages of this site are also published in Russian for buyers in Russia and the CIS: the overview, tube settler media, MBBR media, disc aerators and ABS pipes. Specifications and published figures are identical to the English pages; only the language differs.
Minimum sustained wastewater temperature, flow, influent analysis and target ammonia. Sizing a cold plant on summer data is the most common error we see in this region.
