Supplying media to African projects

Most African water and wastewater projects we quote are procured through a consultant, funded by a development bank or a utility budget, and delivered to a site a long way from the port. That shapes what the supplier has to provide before anything is manufactured.

What the tender usually asks for

Specification complianceThe consultant names the parameter table and the material. Our product pages publish both, so the compliance statement can be written against them line by line
Material declarationWhere the specification names the polymer, the declaration is a document, not a statement. Ask for it at order stage
Test and inspectionPre-shipment inspection is normal. Tell us the inspector and the checklist, and the inspection happens before the container is sealed rather than after it arrives
Packing list and drawingsNeeded by the consultant, the contractor and the customs broker - three different readers, one document set

Where a local standard is named in the tender, the specification is answered against that standard and the declaration is written to match it. We do not claim a local approval we have not been granted.

Logistics is half the quotation

Media is bulky and light, so freight and inland transport dominate the landed cost. Three practical points:

Port and route. Name the destination port in the enquiry - Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Lagos, Tema, Durban, Casablanca, Alexandria and Djibouti all behave differently on freight and on documentation. The quotation should state the port it is priced to.

Container loading. Modules nest and carriers fill voids; the packing plan decides how many cubic metres fit in a 40′ HC. Ask for the packing plan before the order, not with the shipping documents.

Site access. A container that cannot reach the basin becomes a manual carrying job. Confirm the offloading point and the last kilometre before the quantity is fixed, because it sometimes changes the packing format rather than the price.

Frequently asked

Do you supply against development-bank funded tenders?

Yes. Those projects normally require a documented specification compliance statement, a material declaration, pre-shipment inspection and a packing plan, and all four can be issued before shipment. The bill of quantities and the specification are what we need to quote against.

Which port should the quotation be priced to?

The one the project nominates. Freight to Mombasa, Lagos, Tema, Durban, Casablanca or Djibouti differs enough that a quotation without a named port cannot be compared with another supplier.

Can you supply a partial container for a pilot plant?

Yes - a pallet or part container of carriers is a normal pilot order. For settling media the practical minimum is the volume that fills a pallet, because the freight dominates below that.

How is the quantity verified on arrival?

By count against the packing list, and by pieces per cubic metre or module count against the published figure. That is why every product page states the count rather than only the volume.
